- This invited paper presents the results from new simulation methods applied to the design of freight vehicle running gear. It includes results demonstrating significant benefits over existing methods. The techniques described here led to the work carried out in the EU funded 'DYNAFREIGHT' project [http://www.dynafreight-rail.eu/] together with locomotive manufacturers Stadler who are manufacturers of freight vehicles. Impact demonstrated in the DYNAFREIGHT project included a reduction in wheel and track wear and life cycle costs for freight operators. The paper has been citied 29 times in key papers from many different groups working on improving railway vehicle performance.
