- This major monograph (pp. viii + 476; 190,000 words) is the result of more than ten years of research, much of it conducted in archives in the UK, USA, Australia and New Zealand. It spans an unusually long timeframe, from 1795 to 1917, and expansive geographical range, while also integrating remarkably diverse source materials, from specialist palaeontological journals to novels and poetry. Each of the ten chapters is equivalent to a journal article, and together with a lengthy introduction they collectively reveal that popular culture has the power to transform elite science.

- This book draws and builds on three articles that were submitted to REF2014, which have been amalgamated in chapter 4 (pp. 133-67). The material was revised, synthesised into the wider arguments of the book and in parts expanded, especially in exploring the role played by Caroline Owen in her husband Richard's scientific and literary practices, and also incorporates new illustrations. Chapter 4 represents c. 7% of the entire book (pp. 476; 190,000 words), the remainder of which (introduction, 9 chapters and an epilogue) consists of new material not previously submitted for research assessment.
