- This paper proposed and formalised a new type of assembly lines, parallel U-shaped assembly lines, and provided an initial methodology for optimising and balancing such lines. It has pioneered a new research field in assembly line balancing literature, which was followed up by other researchers. The work has been the topic of invited talks at international conferences (e.g. 15th IFAC Symposium, Ottawa, MAY 11-13, 2015), and with projected improvement in workforce efficiency, has attracted interest from international companies (e.g. Guangqi Wuling Auto Works in China) for implementation in automotive manufacturing.
