- The first volume of a massive biography of one of America’s most acclaimed novelists, this book utilizes years of research into Bellow’s life and its literary, cultural and historical context. At 864 pages, the book contains a ‘dizzying’ wealth of detail (Guardian) into Bellow’s relationships with family, friends, lovers, and key literary figures. Much of this information is new and emerges from Leader’s unique access to Bellow’s papers, as well as visits to multiple international archives. The book utilizes over 150 interviews with relatives and close friends, some of whom have not spoken previously to researchers.
