- Originally commissioned as a dictionary of contemporary design as a companion volume to The Language of Things, this book evolved over time into 30 essays that approach design through a personal perspective as a lens for contemporary culture. It touches on art, architecture, design, urbanism and popular culture, and provides a fresh perspective on the part that design has to play in a wider idea of culture.
The book was part of Sudjic’s long-term commitment to the idea of dissolving the barriers between design and the rest of the cultural landscape. It mixes first-hand experience of curatorial practice at the Venice Architecture Biennale and the Design Museum, as well as of editorial work, at Domus in Milan, and of starting Blueprint in London, as well as of historical moments, such as the Vienna of Adolf Loos, and the impact of Philippe Starck and Raymond Loewy.
The book was the BBC Radio 4 book of the week read in 2014, rebroadcast in 2017, reviewed by the Times, the Evening Standard, presented at the Royal Society of Arts, London, with related talks presented in Madrid, 2020, Sofia, 2018, Seoul 2018, Warsaw 2017. It was published in hardback in 2014, with a paperback edition in 2015. It was translated for publication in Chinese, Spanish, Korean, Polish, French and there was an edition published in the USA.
