- This research quantifies, using a novel X-ray tomography technique, the porosity and intermetallic particles in Al-Si alloys. This is a challenging issue for the automotive industry as it deteriorates the mechanical properties of the castings. The research was presented at an invited talk at TMS international conference. Research findings have been cited by researchers in Asia and Europe. The PhD student (mdegiovanni@bridgnorthaluminium.co.uk) is now employed by Bridgnorth Aluminium Ltd in Birmingham. Examples of casting defects from the research are incorporated in the JLR metal processing modules (TAS) programmes presented to individuals in industry.
