- Built on ten years of archival research across Europe, India, Australia and New Zealand, this 200,000-word monograph with 60 images recovers the sensuous experiences of combatants, non-combatants and civilians from South Asia in World War I and their socio-cultural, visual and literary worlds.1.4 million Indians were recruited. It recovers and analyses a substantial amount of hitherto unknown material –trench-objects, photographs, paintings, letters, diaries, sound-recordings, and works in English, several European and Indian languages – to produce the first cultural and literary history, moving from recruitment in Punjab to battlefield and POW experiences in Europe and Mesopotamia to post-war Pan-Asian visions.
