- This monograph (252 pages,171 illustrations, 13 contributors) reports on and interprets five major seasons of excavation and survey, each season with a team of c. 20 excavators. As well as publishing the excavations and artefacts, it includes a wide range of studies, including history, architecture, place-names, landscape, 137 radiocarbon dates, and a detailed catalogue and analytical discussion of an internationally significant assemblage of early medieval sculpture. The broad scope of the underlying research adds significantly to its scale and complexity: the book addresses issues of state formation and royal power across Scotland and situates the results in a European context.
