- The first edition of the surviving letters written by Robert Southey between 1816-18, Part Five draws on three decades of original research on manuscripts in 100+ archives across UK, Europe and North America. It provides newly-transcribed, freshly-edited texts of 537 letters (341 published for the first time, with a further 51 published in full for the first time). It accompanies these with a full scholarly apparatus: headnotes; extensive footnotes covering the entire interdisciplinary range of Southey’s interests; chronology; newly-researched biographies of his correspondents; and 3500-word introduction that places the letters in personal and wider cultural contexts.
