- Illness as Many Narratives is a longer-form output (96,000 words) that took six years to research. It engages with many art forms and media not represented before in illness narrative study, including photography, performance art, drama, film, and animation. Research also involved several visits to an underexamined American artists’ books archive. To argue for more cross-fertilisation between contemporary arts and medical humanities/medical education, it was necessary to develop expertise across these diverse fields. The book represents a demanding piece of research because its case studies also explore a range of physical and mental illness experiences in British and American culture.
