Unit of assessment 10: Mathematical Sciences
COVID-19 has affected all parts of the University and its business. Primarily, initially, it diverted all staff to more time-consuming approaches to teaching which reduced the time they could dedicate to research. Most aspects of research have therefore been affected. Bidding, presenting papers, and publishing declined in 2021, and some expenditure of the funding we provided to staff had to be diverted to other ways of doing that work. PhD student intermissions (especially among lab-based subjects) were more apparent in 2021. Those requiring on campus working were most affected, which is why we reopened laboratories as soon as we could. In terms of actual REF preparations, the biggest difficulty has been pulling together the evidence for Impact Case Studies. The extra time allocated largely dealt with that helped immensely and mitigated it significantly. Working remotely is generally more difficult. Providing physical outputs will be more of a challenge. However, generally, as with Long Covid, the full effects of the pandemic are more likely to be felt at London Met in the next REF, not this one.
