Glyndwr University shut for on-site teaching as soon as the COVID 19 epidemic became apparent and moved all of its teaching on line with delivery in full starting one week later. This has had a profound effect upon the institution and research in all forms since March 2020. The university, through its research strategy is developing its staff and involving them in research. As a result approximately half of the university’s research students are members of staff. These were completely absorbed in the effort to move teaching on line. Few of these have sought an interruption to their studies, hoping that the situation will get better quickly. This has had a knock-on effect in delaying publications and other outputs including exhibitions - many are in the later stages of their studies and would be expected to be publishing their work. Hence there has been an impact on outputs which will continue beyond the current REF period. The restrictions in Wales have generally been tighter than elsewhere in the UK with more stringent longer lockdowns together with police ensuring these were being adhered to. Staff were completely off site at all campuses and were unable to return to laboratory & workshop facilities until the middle of October 2020, likewise there are students working in clinical settings at the nearly Maelor General Hospital who were unable to work during this period. The switch of emphasis to on line teaching has of course also affected the ability to formulate funding bids. This is despite the university doubling the available time of the bid managers who support academic colleagues in preparing proposals just before the pandemic started. The university has learnt from its experiences and has developed a research informed Active Learning Framework based upon our principles to ensure we have a flexible accessible approach to our teaching. It now has procedures for maintaining research activity, where we can control the environment, during a pandemic which can be used in the future.
